Never mind the White Stripes, here’s 60 Second Crush.

60 Second Crush
Scratch
Aural Pleasure Records

BY ALI MOOSSAVI
The South End

Dirty, crunchy rock meets slick production on 60 Second Crush’s latest
album, Scratch, which is destined to set the standard of rock in this city
for some time to come. This CD is full of heavy riff intros, breakdowns in
the middle and climaxes at the end of every song, kind of like good sex. The
name of the band comes from guitarist Peder Seglund’s love life, so maybe
there’s definitely some creativity applied here.
An autobiographical album, all 12 songs relate to love, broken relationships
and broken friendships. The highlights here are “What’s On Your Mind,”
“Everyday Girl” and “Fading Away” the great unorthodox tempos in the first
two as well as a cool tribal intro in “Writing On The Wall.”
The downside of this album would have to be the duo vocals on “Destructive,”
where the same verse sung would be repeated by someone screaming, sort of
like Golden Earring’s “Twilight Zone.”
The song has a rap-metal vibe, but the band should avoid going down that
route, lest the results prove destructive. 60 Second Crush would also do
well by upping the level of aggression in the music and overall style.
The intro in “Fading away” is a good example of what these guys could do in
that area. Considering that their influences include the MC5 and Motörhead,
the band should rely on the formula that made those bands the legends that
they are: loud, fast and furious.
Overall, though, this band seriously kicks ass and you, the local music
consumer, need to go to your local record store and pick up Scratch. If
you’re tired of the White Stripes, Kid Rock, or geriatric has-beens like Ted
Nugent representing where you’re coming from, then check out 60 Second
Crush’s Scratch and find out what Detroit’s sound used to be about: solid
rock ‘n’ roll.
